Well, this issue doesn't belong on this list, really. There is the
debian-hurd list, but it does not really belong there, too. Maybe there is
no list in the world where it does belong to yet, so I'll answer you here
quickly.

At the moment, the hurd does not emulate the Linux syscalls. Other programs,
that don't use syscalls, can be compiled for the Hurd. Currently, no binary
compatibility is realized, and it is not the primary goal of the Hurd
developers, IIRC. However, binary compatibility is or will be easy to
implement, so everyone who wants to do something about it is welcome to
help.

As a micro kernel, the Hurd should be an ideal os for emulation (dosemu,
wine etc).

Development is still going on, and people gather together at debian-hurd for
a Hurd binary distribution based on Debian. At the moment, we work on the
bootstrapping process. The Hurd will be quite different to Linux in some
respects, so it is still an interesting project on its own.

And, no, it is not going to kill Linux (anytime soon anyway). Flames are
kindly forwarded to /dev/null. At the moment, neither performance nor
stability is appealing.
