Actually, my explanation is a bit misleading.  gethostbyname() returns a
structure that contains the name, aliases, and addresses of the host.  The
caller in the situations under discussion discards all but the fqdn.
However, it is gethostbyname() that decides that the second field in the
the first matching line in /etc/hosts is the fqdn.
