This platitude is truely applicable here.
Searching for the underlying principle that causes some dos program to
fail to work properly, when it is not possible to effect the functionality
of said program, is a waste of time.
The issue here is much simpler than "how is this broken so we can fix it".
The issue is that this brokenness is going to exist into the indefinite
future. Since we can't fix these programs, the solution, if any, lies
outside the technical details of their particular failure.
The solution that looks most feasible at the moment is to supply a
correctly functioning DOS ftp client to our transition users.
I am currently investigating NCSftp, which was suggested by Santiago. It
is freeware (the closest DOS equivalent of Free Software...I know it's not
the same..) and there are both slip packet drivers for it as well as many
ethernet packet drivers built in.
If you have a better suggestion for "fixing" this problem, I am interested
in hearing it, but I don't see how dickering over who does what to whom
reguarding the transfer features of software we both agree is broken gets
us any closer to a useful fix.
If this were software that has the potential for being repaired, then such
analysis would be worthwhile.
