deity and apt-get

I just installed deity_19980324-1_i386.deb from project/experimental.

I first ran
 /tmp# dpkg-cache add cache /var/lib/dpkg/status:status:today
 /var/lib/dpkg/status:status:today
 Total Package Names : 1985
   Normal Packages: 299

   Single Virtual Packages: 55
   Mixed Virtual Packages: 2
   Missing: 1617
 Total Distinct Versions: 301
 Total Dependancies: 1045
W: Package file /var/lib/dpkg/status line 11204 package libg++27-dev has a self referencing provides, ignoring.
as indicated in /usr/doc/deity/README.debian.

When trying to run deity I get the message
 /tmp# deity
 Trying load of -*-helvetica-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-*-*
 Loading cache
 Took 10000
-- You might want to run 'apt-get update' see apt-get(8).
 E: Can't open /var/cache/deity/pkgcache.bin - open (2 No such file or directory)
E: The previous errors apply to a Package Cache File /var/cache/deity/pkgcache.bin

I don't have a manual page for apt-get nor do I seem to have an
apt-get program (locate couldn't find it nor did it seem to be
included with the deity package).

Could someone please tell me how to proceed?

BTW, "Dependencies" is mis-spelled in the output from dpkg-cache.
