Yes, these are all very good ideas. But the original complainer mentioned
that there should be an escape. So, could we also have:
  ..
that would simply serve as an escape?

I.e., if I were to build a package that converts many graphics formats,
then at least I'll be able to have a description that says:

Description: convert graphics formats
 This package converts many graphics formats, like .gif, .jpg, .tga,
 ..dvi, .bmp, .tiff, .tif1, .tiff2, .tiff3, .tiff5, .tiff6, .tiff7, .tiff9
 ..pnv, .ps, and .bmp into .mybitmap files.

Although I'm not sure the description above is really sane, I do think
there should be a way to escape the dots.

The upstream maintainer is allowed to do things different 
than Debian, but only if he has good reasons to do so.
