Shadow file permissions

What are the correct permissions for the shadow files? I suddenly
found that xlock no longer unlocks, and I think it might be because
the group permissions are wrong:

[511] [snoopy:bam] ~ >ls -l /usr/bin/X11/xlock /etc/shadow /etc/gshadow
-rw-r----- 1 root shadow 509 Aug 2 14:35 /etc/gshadow
-r-------- 1 root root 1056 Aug 14 13:46 /etc/shadow
-rwxr-sr-x 1 root shadow 565164 Jun 27 08:37 /usr/bin/X11/xlock*

Should shadow be the same as gshadow??? Or should be it read-only,
as is the case now?
