Right, and as soon as they did, we'd take the last free version, and
get a group together to carry it forward.  The non-free people be
welcome to continue working on their newly licensed version, but I
would bet that a lot of the community would come with us, and in any
case, we'd still have a perfectly usable platform to build on.

In fact, this just happened with XFree86 (or was that finally
resolved?).
