i don't think the two should be merged, as i think it would be unecessary, 
difficult, and impractical, as well as possibly alienating people from debian 
all together.

why not simply having Debian GNU/Linux and Debian GNU/HURD, as I'm sure has 
been proposed already? the same os with different kernels and other less 
subtle things, such as the filesystem hierarchy.

i *do* think binary *compatibility*, and not emulation, would go along way in 
increasing the viability of both kernels. and the more kernels binary 
compatibility is achieved with, the better. 

re: your comments on microkernels
i don't know if they are inherently slower, but on current machines, there is
a significant amount of overhead. on faster machines, the difference may be 
negligible or even improvement.
