Re: upstreams maintainer conflict, was: wget: remove outdated manual page

Dear all,

I have been reading this little `discussion' for some time now.
Frankly, I am disappointed. What started out as a reasonable request for
the man page to be rewritten has now been blown out of all proportion, not
least by a number of inflammatory mails sent by various people who seem
not to have bothered reading all of the preceeding mails, and/or have got
the wrong end of the stick entirely.

Now I don't know the intricasies of the GPL licencse, being new to
Linux. I subscribed to this list and to the users list, in the hope of
picking up some useful information (which, to a certain extent, I have).
This sort of thing is not a good advert for the debian community (as
anyone can read the mailing lists). It seems to me a simple matter to
convert the --help output to some sort of man page, which could then point
to the info system for more detailed instructions. The legal/techincal
wrangles as to whether the author has the right to insist on a new manual
page are irrelevant. The authors of linux packages put a lot of time and
effort into writing their packages. It seems to me that we (as a
community) could at least _try_ and co-operate with them.

If neccessary, if you send me the help output, I'll write the damn
thing myself. I _hope_ this will not prove necessary.

Yours,

Matthew
