Are they really example files?

The package supplies an utility to configure the printcap
(/usr/sbin/magicfilterconfig ) which extracts from the "example" tarball
one or more filters and installs them in /usr/sbin.

I suggest that you put the tarball in /usr/lib/magicfilter, maybe
untarring them there (so dpkg database will know about them) and install
symlink(s) in /usr/sbin (or use the /usr/lib location directly in the
created printcap file, if you think that superuser does not have reason
to have them in her spacename).
