configuration tool

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

I deleted the message that mentioned it, but I read something
about a config tool similar to redhats gui config tool, and found myself
thinking about that a lot. Somebody might already be working on this, but
if not I'd like to put this idea out.
I see a framework where packages that often needs to be
reconfigured might provide an entry in the configuation tool. For example
the adduser package might provide this tool the ability to add/remove
users, the bind package might provide turning options on and off, and
maybe adding/removing zones. If something like this were widely employed
by debian packages, we might really be able to provide an OS as easy to
maintain as MS's (might even put a lot of us sysadmins out of a job,
maybe I should shut up).
I would like to see this tool provide a gui, ncurses & command
line interface, and possibly use m4 to generate the systems config files
in most simple cases (ala sendmail.cf m4 config) and support script hooks
(ala {pre, post}{inst,rm} in dpkg). I don't personally have the time to
work on this program, and it's primary flaw is that it would be a big PITA
to write and introduce one more painful step to building some debian
packages, in lots of cases this could introduce a tremendous ammount of
work to building a debian package. Maybe a little public discussion about
this will help flesh out this idea and make it a little simpler.
							thanks,
							Robert
