I had to install RedHat 4.1 (wasn't my decision.) on a WWW server,
and found that they have a similar thing in their pretend-its-a-GUI
installer. I also found that I much prefer dselect, since it makes
much better use of screen real-estate, gives more control to the
installer, and provides more information about the insides of the
packages.
It could be improved with menus (ala `mc`), Dale's suggestion for
package sets and more automated installs of them, gpm support, and a
way to flip to another console and read manuals or something while the
packages are being installed. It should also keep a log of all output
by `dpkg` and scripts, so that bugs can be more easily reported on
failed installs or conflicts.
An easy no-brainer beginner's way to get a ppp network link going[1]
would be great, so installation can continue using `dselect`'s ftp
method. What's 7 hours of ftp time out of my allotted 30-120 hours a
month online? I think a lot of people will install that way;
overnight.
