Umm, what's wrong with the termcap indications? screen and xemacs both
"figure out" that they have or don't have color support, I'm not
actually sure what property they use... but surely ls could do the
same [really, if ls does color, there should be no objection to it
linking in ncurses :-)]

This way it would do the right thing exactly when it could...
