cua devices and prospective package gpstrans

I have the following package nearly ready:

 new debian package, version 2.0.
 size 28530 bytes: control archive= 835 bytes.
     550 bytes,    12 lines      control
     618 bytes,    10 lines      md5sums
 Package: gpstrans
 Version: 0.31b-1
 Architecture: i386
 Depends: libc5 (>= 5.4.0-0)
 Installed-Size: 69
 Maintainer: James R. Van Zandt <jrv@vanzandt.mv.com>
 Description: up- and download data from a Garmin GPS receiver
  GPStrans allows a user to up- and download waypoints, route, almanac
  and trackroutes from a Garmin GPS.

However, gpstrans uses /dev/cua? devices.

Is that okay, or can someone explain how to convert a program to use
of the /dev/ttyS? devices, or point to a discussion somewhere?
