As soon as patches are reasonable, simple and clean, I think that
non-maintainer uploads could be the way to go in general, not only in
urgent cases.

If I maintain a package version "x", I would really don't care very much
to see a version "x.1" for another platform if diffs are sent to me and 
I'm still allowed to release an x+1 version.
