If I understand correctly, one of the current problems
with the dselect/dpkg utilities is that there is a
potential that packages on a distribution could get out
of wack. By that I mean that dependancies are not
contained on a distribution, version problems may exist
and even binary files could be missing.
I've experience all these conditions on 2.1.2 and 2.1.8.
User interfaces are great but shouldn't we be concentrating
on a fully integrated package maintenance facility which
would allow one to assemble a distribution correctly such
that during installation or upgrade, certain things would
not have to be checked for because we know the package and
all its dependencies are contained in the distribution.
If we minimize the amount of logistical processing during
install or upgrade a fairly lean, high performance install
facility should be no problem.
I guess what I'm trying to say is would a replacement for
dselect/dpkg also mean a replacement for the distribution
build facility?
