Fair enough. However, it turns out that the Internet standard for mail
addresses (RFC 822) allows a `.' only as part of an address or inside a
quoted comment such as

    "Paul J. Thompson"

Thus, an address containing the string `Paul J. Thompson' (without the
quotes) would be malformed according to the standard. The fact that some
mailers allow you to set up such an address or handle such addresses
similarly to correct addresses doesn't change this.

So the short answer is `You can't, at least not reliably'.
