debmake's 'release'--bug or rookie usage error?

All righty. I am set to release Xmorph version 11sep97. I did a build, I
did an install; everything looks good. So I go to my xmorph-11sep97
directory and give the 'release' command...

	$ release
	Cannot find .changes file for this release

Ack. Now what? There is in fact a ../xmorph_11sep97-1_i386.changes file
and a debian/changelog file. Am I doing something wrong? Or is it time
for a bug report?

This is 'release' from debmake 3.3.16, by the way.
