Quite misleading.  It would be nice if it could be fixed... the fact
that ldd works on shared libs *at all* leads people to expect that it
does meaningful things with them, and they tend (as you've seen right
here) to believe its messages.  It would help if it said "no dynamic
references" or something more accurate... even though on a real static
library, it says something like "/usr/lib/libc.a is not a.out or ELF"...
