Warning: possible SYN flooding. Sending cookies.

I looked at the console of my machine this morning and saw many lines like
this:

Jul 3 08:24:39 cancerous kernel: Warning: possible SYN flooding. Sending cookies.
Jul 3 08:24:40 cancerous kernel: validated probe(568e5cd, dc02fea5, 1978, 25, 5 45188934)

The last and third to last columns changed the others stayed the same.

What is this? is someone trying to hack me? What is the output telling me
exactly?

Forgive me for posting to this list but it's the only expert Linux help I
have plus I'm getting a little paranoid.

(The kernel is 2.0.30 on Debian 1.3 btw.)
