As has been mentioned before, there is a simple solution to this problem. perl should be a complementary package to perl-base rather than a superset. perl-base contains the actual executables and crucial libraries and perl contains everything else. Only perl-base is essential; packages which need all the additional functionality can depend on perl. Guy
