I'll argue that obscure compilers shouldn't have short names, whereas
keystroke-saving user commands should.
As an example, gnat is packaged to use "gnatgcc" (for unrelated
reasons, but since I had to pick a new name anyway that seemed the
right choice.) Makefiles have variables for a reason (and in the case
of gnat, I could modify all of the higher level tools to already know
about the name change.)
