dpkg, checksums, permissions
It looks like opinion is split on the question of whether dpkg needs
to store stuff like permissions and checksums in its databases.
Personally I don't think it should, because it's already slow enough.
However, I can probably make it a run-time option, though it would
obviously take some implementation effort which I don't have now.
