colour-ls showing up in dselect

That means it's available.
This means it's not:
-chiark:~> dpkg --print-avail color-ls
Package `color-ls' is not available.
Use dpkg --info (= dpkg-deb --info) to examine archive files,
and dpkg --contents (= dpkg-deb --contents) to list their contents.
You have new mail in /var/spool/mail/sysadmin

dpkg-ftp should do the same thing as the disk method scripts: call
--update-avail on first file (or use --clear-avail first), and then
--merge-avail for the rest.
--forget-old-unavail deletes old stuff from
/var/lib/dpkg/{status,available}, but it only deletes things that
dselect wouldn't show anyway. Call it for tidyness anyway.
