If a package is not physically available, then it should be purged
from the available database, IMO. I think dpkg should have an option to
check for this case.
John Kirk and I looked at this yesterday. We couldn't figure out what
this line from "dpkg --help" means:
dpkg --forget-old-unavail forget uninstalled unavailable pkgs
Perhaps this is what dselect and dpkg-ftp should run. However, I did
not find the solution yet. Anyone have more clues?
