Just so you know, the netpbm ppmforge does not have this problem with ppmforge -- it also seems to solve several other problems with pbmplus. I will be uploading a netpbm package as soon as I get some input on where I should stick the binaries (/usr/bin, or /usr/bin/netpbm...).
