Sorry, but that I find a little harsh. Backward compatibility *must* be
assured at (almost) any cost.

I haven't tried to compile 1.2.13 with gcc 2.7.2, but I recompiled the
ftape.o module two days ago. All that I needed to do was the patch for io.h
that was posted recently.

And I don't see what should be broken here. 1.2.13 is stable as a rock for me.
