That is one more reason to partition /home in something like
/home/u0/<users>
/home/u1/<users>
/home/u2/<users>
.
.
.

Just cd to /home and do a ls -la in that directory. 
Even with AMD with takes ages to complete on a large site.
Partitioning /home can (among other advantages) cut down lookup times
considerably.
