NIS issues (for Debian 1.2)

There are still big problems with NIS when /etc/group has a large number
of entries because a subroutine in libc5 must read all entries via the
network to figure out which groups a user belongs to. This is done once
every minute if at is running from crontab!

We have more than 700 users right now and a search through all entries
takes at least 30 seconds. The YP Servers are very busy if we would not
have stopped it.

The current version of the login in debian does this search twice due to a
bug.

I have posted patches a while ago to:

1. Stop libc5 from doing exhaustive NIS searches across the network.

2. To fix the bug in the login program. The author accepted those patches
and promised a new release but I have not heard from it since. I have
noticed no new release of the loginutils.

Do we leave the situation as it is now (thus forcing us to compile special
version of libc5 and login) or is it worth doing something about it?
