This has been documented for ages. From the gcc man page (the info
file has a similar passage):
-V version
The argument version specifies which version of GNU
CC to run. This is useful when multiple versions
are installed. For example, version might be
`2.0', meaning to run GNU CC version 2.0.
The default version, when you do not specify `-V',
is controlled by the way GNU CC is installed. Nor-
mally, it will be a version that is recommended for
general use.

Yes, as far as I'm concerned, the a.out development packages are in a
deprecated state. They are provided as is, and unless someone is in
an absolute dire situation, I don't intend to provide any more support
for them.
