But that's *only* inside curly braces; outside of them, it is normal.
It's also used by RCS (,v extension) but that shouldn't matter either.
More of a problem is that it is often visually hard to distinguish
from period, and that might confuse people.
I don't really care as long as it gets settled, and dkpg-name gets
fixed -- though it doesn't work at all right now:
+% dpkg-name emacs-19.31-1.i386.deb
moved `emacs-19.31-1.i386.deb' to `./"emacs19.311".i386.deb'
+% ls -al
total 27984
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4794738 May 30 00:09 "emacs19.311".i386.deb
