I also find vi easier to use than ae.

However, imagine that you are a user who does not know how to
use either one, and who has no manuals available.  Using vi
(or emacs) would not be possible.  Using ae would still be pretty
simple.  It would also be pretty simple for a such clueless user to
use pico, ee, or some other editors. but those are all much larger
than ae.

I think this is at least the third go-round for this discussion, and
I don't think it's leading anyplace useful.
