I think ae can be configured to use whatever keys you want. Maybe
<Control><Key> combinations would be better?

As far as not including it, well, nobody is being forced to use
it. Ed and sed are on the base disks. Ex and vi won't fit. But if
you want to attract new (non-Unix) users, then 'edit' better start
something easily grokable. None of the "standard" Unix editor fit
the bill.

(Personally, I  don't care for ae, and vi is the first package I install
on a new system. But I'd rather use ae than ed, for sure.)
