Nothing; in fact, I think ical can do a lot more.  But its a case of
what people are familiar with.

A couple of my users have both independently compiled up xdiary, and
it would be nice if it were installed on the system properly.

Yes, /usr/local/bin is an option, however, many more people out there
may also use xdiary. My system policy is to keep the minimum in
/usr/local. Anything I have in /usr/local is a candidate for being
packaged up.
