Bug#2997: netstd: identd reports IP numbers instead of hostnames
Package: netstd
Version: 2.02-1
identd reports IP numbers instead of hostnames in its syslog messages
when the host in question is not mentioned in /etc/hosts. My /etc/hosts
contains the following:
131.111.131.173 zenda.chu.cam.ac.uk zenda.th.cam.no-net zenda
127.0.0.1 localhost
131.111.131.114 chiark.chu.cam.ac.uk chiark
10.0.0.1 chiark.chu.cam.ac.uk chiark
(zenda is connected to chiark by slip.) The relevant syslog entries are
as follows:
May 14 20:34:05 zenda identd[11334]: from: 131.111.200.47 ( 131.111.200.47 ) for: 1945, 79
May 14 20:34:05 zenda identd[11334]: Successful lookup: 1945 , 79 : dave
May 15 00:53:12 zenda identd[12345]: from: 10.0.0.1 ( chiark.chu.cam.ac.uk ) for: 1062, 79
May 15 00:53:12 zenda identd[12345]: Successful lookup: 1062 , 79 : dave
Note that the problem can be fixed by putting `order bind, hosts' in
/etc/host.conf but this is not (I believe) a Good Thing. Or is it?
