My installation of sysklogd-1.3-1 gives the same errors that Dale M.
reports. (It's ELF, so I can do a.out as a module again)
ldd /sbin/syslogd reports:
libc.so.5 => /lib/libc.so.5.2.18
This is the version of libc5 that I have installed (5.2.18-5) on my system.
