base packages Essential field and mawk

Some time ago I argued that mawk would be better than gawk for the
base series. No one even tried to rebutt me. [I even put some data
at ftp.netaxs.com:/people/cjf/debian/awk for those who wanted to see
how much faster mawk is.]

So should I make a new release of mawk with the Essential: yes field?
And a pre-depends of libc5. Somehow it seems that awk is just a bit
less essential than most of the others. I'm not even sure that awk
satisfies Ian's definition of "essential" -- maybe I need to reread
those subtle arguments ... again.
