You wanted an example of when PPP would be started by init. There are three.

1. You are a free local call away from your flat-rate or free internet
   provider.
2. You have a leased line.
3. You are a client of a flat-rate radio-modem internet provider like Metricom
   Ricochet.

1 and 3 apply to my system.
