I'm a little uncomfortable about it, but there are enough other single
points of failure that it probably doesn't matter one way or the other.

It's not tiny, but diald can use chat and is 10k smaller than dip.

Excellent!  This is something I've wanted for a long time, but have
been too lazy to build my own rescue disks.  I've been lucky a couple
of times that I've left an unused RedHat installed on a spare
partition.
