gawk-3.0.0 now available (ELF only)

I have been evaluating the relative merits of mawk and gawk (both of
which have just been updated by their upstream maintainers). My
analysis indicates that mawk's advantages make it the better choice to
include in the base section. Mawk is fully Posix complient, is faster
than gawk, and its binary package is smaller too (/usr/bin/mawk binary
is some 45k smaller than /usr/bin/gawk and gawk-3.0.0-1.deb is 328422
bytes while mawk-1.2.2-1.deb is only 64608 bytes). However, gawk has
some nice non-standard extensions. So it too should be included in
Debian, but I recommend placing it in the devel section. Note: I have
prepared the packages so that if you install both mawk and gawk,
/usr/bin/awk will be a symbolic link to mawk via the
update-alternatives mechanism.

I have uploaded mawk-1.2.2-1 and gawk-3.0.0-1 to
ftp://ftp.netaxs.com/people/cjf/debian and to ftp.debian.org.

I have begun a thread in comp.lang.awk exploring the various
differences between mawk and gawk. The thread begins with analysis of
some tests that I ran on mawk and gawk.
