I'd call that a very desirable feature, though. Everytime something  
nontrivial happens during install (like, say, 5 lines of info), I find  
myself later wanting to reread what happened.

If we could relay on mail, sending mail might be best; unfortunately, that  
seems to be out. Still - a little logfile might go a long way ... maybe  
just doing a tee on dpkg's output might solve this?
