I recommend that (unless there's some simple way to get syslog to
recognize these messages), the si: entry in /etc/inittab be changed to
read:

si::sysinit:/etc/init.d/boot >>/var/log/boot

[I think that all log files in /var/log/ are automatically rotated?]
