Yes, it was spurious. The kernel write-protect switch bug still exists, though, and wasn't worked around by this root disk. That will _always_ cause boot disk creation to fail if the last base disk was write-protected. I sent Ian a work-around and reported the bug to the linux-kernel list. Thanks Bruce
