While you don't need to have your key signed to start contributing, it
will be needed in case you'll want to apply for DM (and or DD).
Depending on where you are in the world getting signatures on your key
can be pretty easy (most of Europe) or it can take some time and effort
to find and meet people, so I'd recommend starting to think about it
soon.
You can find DDs who are willing to sign keys on
https://wiki.debian.org/Keysigning/Offers ; if there is nobody in your
area, I'd strongly recommend to add yourself to
https://wiki.debian.org/Keysigning/Need : now that many DDs are going on
holidays some of them may check that page if they visit places where
nobody is usually available.
