One aspect you did not explicitly mention is that the binary packages
pathological and pathological-music are both arch:all. So the merger
would even reduce mirror space (due to source package deduplication).

To me this makes sense. Even if there should be frequent pathological
updates ahead, maybe compare it to chromium (3 times larger and
arch:any) or texlive (many times larger and with texlive such updates
actually happened quite a lot due to non-free removal)?
