Two things for the future:
1. please do not forget to update svn-bp:origUrl, it downloaded 1.5.4
instead of 1.6.1 for me and patches did not apply, fun :)
2. please take a look at the output of lintian -iI, there are some info
tags you might want to fix :)
oh and 3. are you sure about this
        # the -V is wanted for 1.5.4
        dh_makeshlibs -V
that generates shlibs with => 1.6.1 now, not 1.5.4
