Re: Bug#533666: RFP: gens -- Sega Genesis / Sega CD / Sega 32X emulator

As a side note, I've been in touch with gens/gs[0] developer, David Korth (pseudo: GerbilSoft), since I was planning to package it in Debian Games Team. Everything being on hold because of the Starscream situation. Last message from Dave one week ago was that he would see with Neill Corlett and ask him about the licensing issue (after I raised the idea, since Neil has been and is still releasing programs under the GPL). I wasn't able to get in touch with Neil for another matter, so I can't be sure how it will work out.

Except for that code, and unlike the original gens, gens/gs doesn't seem to ship the Microsoft copyrighted code, nor any kaillera code (David Korth is planning to add network play in later versions). All new code is GPL-2+ (bear in mind that was not an exhaustive review since I wasn't sure how the Starscream licensing would be resolved).

There's still other issues - some C64 code is Copyright Commodore for example. Some is ported from other Gens forks, and that should be ok since they would have inherited the GPL, even when the headers are missing. But some files without headers might prove a bit harder to track.

Gens/GSs might be an easier target for license issues considering it's quite active upstream. AFAIR, the fork was due to not having access to gens CVS, and Dave Korth was planning to open a CVS for Gens/GS. Don't know if Debian can provide one though ;)

[0] To summarize the project, from David Korth:
I've been working on a fork of Gens for the past few months. The main

The improvements on the Linux side are really interesting, and bring it up-to-par with other megadrive emulators on proprietary OS.
