No its just a naming convention ;-) You are fully logged in as an avatar.

You have a server (and other grid services) and a viewer. "secondlife"
is actually the service run by linden labs. The viewer connected to a
grid service such as secondlife in the (similar) way a web browser
connected to a web site. There are other services now built on the BSD
licensed opensim as an alternative to the secondlife service.

The viewer i speak of here is capable of connecting to these other services too.

The word "secondlife" is actually a trademark of linden labs, so that
cannot be directly used. There is on going discussion to resolve this
in an issue that is satisfactory for everyone so that it is obvious
that a given viewer package is a client that is capable of talking
compatible protocols but keep the secondlife name as the linden
provided service.
