   * I am debating the pros and cons of having the symlink cleanup kludge
     in preinst or in postinst/prerm.
With preinst, the symlink gets cleaned up as soon as possible, before
unpack. The drawback is this changes the user's system, even if the
user decides not to go further with the package's unpack or
configuration. But we can justify this by saying it is a surgical
change, intended to repair the shortcommings of a prior maintainer
     script.
With postinst/prerm, the changes occur after the user has commited to
them. Of course, a user who unpacks but does not configure the new
version will still be stuck with the symlink. But a user that never
upgrades will never see the benefit either. :)
My thought is just to go ahead and move the kludge to postinst/prerm.
Why prerm? Because imagine if a user goes through unpacking this
package, then decides to remove it without configuring.
