Perhaps you could try using the libgc4 (4.14) source package I made,
available at <URL:http://www.debian.org/~aph/> ?

I'm really considering NMU'ing libgc4, even though I really oughta
wait a week or so. There are an ever-increasing number of packages
which use it and right now it won't compile on non-i386 platforms at
all, so it's inhibiting the porting effort.

My solution in my version was jsut to turn off threading, which seems
to require some arch-specific assembly. I believe Daniel Jacobowitz
actually was able to rewrite this assembly for powerpc; that should be
included also (allowing threading in powerpc and i386 then).

Libgc4 maintainer -- please attend to this soon!
